The Complete Guide to Best of the Super Juniors XXII

This Friday, the most prestigious and longest-running junior heavyweight tournament in pro wrestling begins — the Best of the Super Juniors. For the 22nd straight year, the tournament will see some of the best, most exciting cruiserweights in the world fight it out, round-robin style. After a victor is crowned, he will go on to challenge Kenny Omega for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship at the Dominion 7.5 Pay-Per-View event. This post is a comprehensive look at the upcoming tournament from all angles, and a resource for those wishing to follow along at home — it’s a program for BOSJ XXII and then some!

Rules

In round-robin tournaments, each participant competes against every other participant, and whoever finishes with the most wins (or points) is the overall victor. In New Japan’s round-robin tournaments (the Best of the Super Juniors, the G1 Climax, and the World Tag League), the field is divided into two blocks — an “A” block and a “B” block — with competitors wrestling everyone else in their blocks. In this tournament, each block consists of eight competitors, meaning that a total of 56 matches will take place before the two finalists are determined (though in past years, sometimes a runner-up from each block has been included in a semifinal round). Scoring is based upon match outcomes — a win is worth two points, a draw is worth one point for each competitor, and a loss is worth zero points. Traditionally, the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion participates in the tournament with the goal of proving himself superior to all comers, but this year, Kenny Omega has announced that he will not be competing.

Schedule

The tournament opens on May 22 in Korakuen Hall and the finals will take place on June 7 in the Yoyogi National Gymnasium. The entire tournament will take place over the course of 13 shows, with non-tournament matches included on tournament cards to stretch out the event and, presumably, give the wrestlers a less grueling schedule. New Japan Pro Wrestling has released the full lineups for all of the events, with the exception of the finals (the card of which will be contingent upon who advances). The noted shows will be airing live on New Japan World at the indicated times, while the rest will be added to the service the day after they take place.
